Opportunities in a Slowdown

Conventional wisdom says investors should be patient and stay focused on their long-term goals during economic slowdowns. That may be the best strategy for individuals, but a market decline is no time for companies to hibernate. Turbulent markets present unique opportunities for businesses that know what to do.

Companies that are slow to move or to recognise the market's expectations for change in their industries, regardless of prevailing economic conditions, will continue to lose market support and value to more nimble competitors. Companies that choose to scale back and wait for an upturn in the economy do so at their own and their shareholders' peril.
