The likelihood of business survival is dramatically improved if the venture is continuously growing. In fact, a firm can more than double its chance of survival by averaging just 10 percent growth per year. However, one lesson from the recent "dot com" failures is that increased market share is not enough to prevent extinction. Growth is not an end. It is a means. A substantial portion of the profits provided by this year's harvest must be devoted to next year's expansion, so the company does not become strategically disadvantaged. The conundrum of how to simultaneously pursue growth and profitability is addressed in this study.
